Edinburgh: A Medieval Encounter
Edinburgh, with its historic charm and cobblestoned streets, offers a wealth of experiences that seem to transport you back in time, and there's no better way to start exploring than by taking a leisurely stroll through the Grassmarket. Nestled in the heart of Edinburgh's Old Town, the Grassmarket is a vibrant, picturesque area, teeming with history, eclectic shops, and cozy cafes. Walking through, you can almost hear the echoes of the bustling market and cheers from the crowd witnessing a routine hanging, centuries ago. Afterwards grab a pint at the Fiddler’s Arms on the corner, do some people-watching, and soak up the lively atmosphere with Edinburgh Castle as the backdrop.
* View of Edinburgh Castle from the Grassmarket
Once you’re nice and buzzed, try to head up the hill utilizing the narrow cobblestone stairwells towards the majestic Edinburgh Castle. The walk itself is part of the adventure, as you ascend the charming streets, the castle, perched dramatically on Castle Rock, looms ever closer, dominating the skyline. Stepping into Edinburgh Castle is like walking through the pages of a history book or a Game of Thrones set. And of course, the views of Edinburgh from the castle ramparts are simply astounding - a sprawling panorama of the city and beyond. If the lines aren’t outrageous, it’s worth it to see the Crown Jewels and the Stone of Destiny, but don’t waste hours of your trip to see these artifacts.
As the day starts to wane, and your feet begin to tire from the day's explorations, it's time to treat yourself to and unwind at The Witchery by the Castle. Just a stone's throw from the castle's entrance, this enchanting restaurant is the epitome of Scottish opulence and charm. With its gothic elegance, elaborate velvet and leather, and candle-lit ambiance, The Witchery makes for an unforgettable dining experience. The menu, rich with Scottish delicacies and the finest ingredients, is as impressive as the surroundings. Whether you opt for the succulent roast lamb wellington (my choice) or the fresh, locally sourced seafood, your expectations will be exceeded, I promise.
* View from Calton Hill
If you have more time or additional days in Edinburgh, the Royal Mile, St. Giles’ Cathedral, and Calton Hill are all iconic locations that you won’t be disappointed by. They’re all easily accessible and within walking distance of Old Town Edinburgh.
